Parenting a newborn while also trying to keep the spark in your relationship alive can be challenging. Between sleepless nights and being preoccupied with your bundle of joy during their wakeful hours, it’s easy to unintentionally put your relationship on the back burner. Having to dedicate most of your time towards your little one makes it difficult to plan dates for you and your partner – even for Valentine’s day.
If you’re facing this dilemma, do not despair. We have compiled a list of six at-home date ideas for new parents that you and your partner can try out.
1. Dinner for Two
Whether you choose to have a home-cooked meal or food from your favourite restaurant, you can never go wrong with an at-home dinner date. To spice things up, you and your partner can dress up for the occasion. You can also light up a few scented candles to make the scene aesthetically pleasing; some soft music in the background can also enhance the romantic ambience.

2. Netflix & Chill
Why not bring the cinema home by having a classic movie night? With Netflix, Showmax, and HBO, you and your partner are spoilt for choice when it comes to spending quality time together. To make the experience realistic, you can turn the lights off, cuddle, and have some good popcorn during the movie.

It’s easy to fall into the trap of neglecting self-care when parenting a newborn. For Valentine’s, you and your significant other can have an improvised spa day to unwind. DIY face masks. Massages. Even a good, old bubble bath. You and your other half can use this time to destress and strengthen your togetherness. For atmosphere, aromatherapy candles are a good idea.
You can even be cheesy and add red rose petals to your bubble bath since it’s the month of love.

4. Game Time
It’s all about actively working towards spending time together, so having a game night with your partner is a great thought. That’s another good way to blow steam and focus on something else other than your busy day-to-day schedule. Even simple board games such as Monopoly and Scrabble can do. Spending quality time together while also having fun is the goal.

5. At-Home Picnic
Since you probably can’t go to the park because you have to look after your little one, an indoor picnic is the better option. You can make things exciting by emulating the real picnic experience: buy your favourite foods and sit close to each other on a soft blanket. A perfect opportunity to catch up and bond.

6. Bring Out Your Artistic Side
If you’re feeling creative, why not have a painting session with your partner? You can set up a home studio; art supplies such as canvases, paint, and brushes are quite inexpensive. You can make this date edgy by painting while drinking your wine of choice. The mere act of creating something together will release tension, uplift your spirits, and help you invest time in each other.
As a new parent, your little one is understandably your priority. However, it’s important to remember to take time out for yourself and your partner, especially for special occasions. With that said, if your babysitter is unavailable, don’t let that stop you from celebrating the 14th at home with your partner. Home is where the heart is, after all.
