How To Have a Smoother Pregnancy This Summer
Share

The summertime can be unbearable for anyone. Add being pregnant to the equation, and it can be a miserable time for the mom-to-be. Your body is already going through rapid changes and processes, your internal temperature is already high, and you’ve also got to carry that extra weight that comes with the baby. So it is not always enjoyable.
Keeping cool at all times is essential during this period. We don’t want you missing out on fun all cooped up in the house in front of the fan, so here are a few tips you can use to have a smooth summer pregnancy while keeping yourself and your baby safe.
Drink lots of water
This one is a no-brainer, but it’s even more essential to keep hydrated during the summer while pregnant as it helps regulate your body temperature and keep your system working at its best.
Aim to drink at least 8 to 10 glasses of water daily or consume other high-electrolyte sports drinks if you’re outside or active.
Mist yourself regularly
While on the topic of water, invest in a spray bottle or one of those fans that release a fine mist and keep it on you when temperatures get unbearable. Spray regularly to cool down
Wear light materials
Refrain from wearing too many layers of clothing and materials that aren’t breathable or tight. Instead, give yourself some room to breathe by wearing loose-fitted clothing like palazzo pants, maxi skirts, or dresses. Add a wide-brimmed hat if you’re in the sun to minimise any chances of sunburn.
Use sunscreen every day
Do not skimp out on using sunscreen. Protect yourself from the sun’s harmful rays at all times to avoid sunburn and reduce your chances of developing skin cancer. Find a sunscreen with a broad spectrum and one suitable for your skin type.

Avoid direct sunlight
Sunscreen can only protect you so much, so if you must be outside, find a cool and shady spot to reduce the likelihood of sunburn. Also, keep your movements to a minimum to avoid any possibility of suffering from a heatstroke.
Go swimming
Summertime means more fun in the pool. Use the pool as a means to cool down. However, swim with caution and stop if you become exhausted. Reapply sunscreen regularly to avoid sunburn and stay hydrated.
Eat light and healthy foods
Don’t weigh yourself down by eating heavy foods and junk often. South African summers are perfect for enjoying light and refreshing salads, grilled meats and veggies, and cool desserts. So eat that ice cream cone and toss that greek salad. Try new combinations out and have fun.
Elevate your feet regularly
One of the more unpleasant parts of pregnancy is swollen feet, and the summertime heat can only make them worse. Reduce the time you spend on them and kick your feet up often. Keeping them elevated will ensure they’re well-rested, resulting in less swelling.
