Three Benefits Downtime Has For the Young Ones

The June holidays have finally arrived. No more morning rush for some weeks, and just for a little while, both you and the children don’t have to worry about the Monday blues. Much-needed respite for all. According to Dr. Laura Hlavaty, a pediatric psychologist, downtime is “more than just a break for mom and child, and research shows there’s tremendous value in just being.”
Downtime can come in many shapes, from reading and spending time out in nature to playing board games and simply just taking naps.
Here are three benefits of proper downtime:
1. Downtime Stimulates Your Child’s Creativity

“Studies show kids that have regular downtime are more creative,” said Dr. Hlavaty. And this is because with downtime comes boredom, which forces children to be a little more creative with their spare time.
2. Helps With De-Stressing

With the reprieve from homework and projects, the pressure of studying for tests and exams, and worrying about the week, downtime comes as a necessary tool for the little ones. This time can help get them to engage in activities that will help them de-stress. Whether it’s watching shows or spending time out in the mall, knowing they have time for themselves without worrying about going back to work helps them to let loose and rest easy.
3. Longer Sleeping Hours

According to KidsHealth.com, school-age kids (6 to 13 years of age) need between nine to twelve hours of sleep to function well, and this doesn’t include naps. Getting inadequate sleep can lead to a lack of focus, mood swings and irritability – so long hours of sleep will help the young ones pay better attention and be able to regulate their emotions.
