Keeping Your Little Ones Warm and Snug Beyond Staying Indoors In Cold Climate

Snow and hail all around South Africa! While it may be tempting to head outside and build snowmen, it’s better to stay indoors, huddle up, and wait for the bitterly cold weather to pass. However, is staying in enough?
Studies have shown that younger children, toddlers in particular, are more likely to catch a cold because their bodies are still developing the immunity to fend off colds and flu infections. Heidi Murkoff (author of What to Expect When You’re Expecting) wrote, “Babies and small children haven’t yet had the chance to build up immunities to the many different cold viruses out there, so each new exposure to germs has the potential to lead to a bout of illness.” So, it’s best to stay on the safe side and keep your little ones shielded from the elements in more ways than simply not going outside.

Here are three things to consider during these cold times:
- Layering Is Important
According to kidshealth.org, “Dressing in layers is the best way to stay warm and toasty in the cold because you can start with lots of clothes to keep you warm and then peel them off once you start to heat up.” So invest in those jerseys, socks, and gloves (mittens).
- Mouth and Nose Etiquette
Coaching your little one about the right way to cough and sneeze helps just as much as staying indoors and dressing up warmly in curbing the spread of colds. Teach your little one the importance of covering their mouths and noses when sneezing and coughing. You could even invest in a face mask, just to go the extra mile.
- Warm Up Their Beds
You can keep your children’s beds snug and warm by heating them with hot water bottles and at least two duvets or blankets. If you have two or more kids of the same gender, it could work to have them sleeping together so they can share their bodily heat and stave off the cold while they sleep.
