South African content creators have graciously shared their motherhood journeys with their audiences since the boom of the country’s digital marketing industry. Through creating awe-inspiring content with their bundles of joy, these 21st-century moms have given us a taste of motherhood in the digital content age.
For our latest Batswadi cover, we delve into the journey of content creators experiencing motherhood for the first time and explore how they intend to marry this new aspect of their lives in the new media space that they work in.
Travel content creator Kutlwano Motla, also known as The Boujee Traveller, conceptualised the idea and brought together fellow content creators Buli Makhubo, Megan Gallie, and Dr Katlego Lekalakala for this special feature.
“As a new mom it can be tough to navigate life with a newborn. I was struggling to get back to being myself since having my baby and would follow all the content creators that just announced their pregnancies and had newborns, and the concept of this cover came from that. To want to understand their journeys. We all post amazing content and create beautiful images and videos, so I wanted them and myself to share how we’re navigating as new moms in the social media world. Pretty pictures don’t always tell the full story,” shares Kutlwano.
She adds: “I personally have learned a lot from those that share their experiences and really wanted insight from the ladies that are part of this cover. We are all so different. Some are more private than others in not showing their kids’ faces (like myself) and others embrace and are fully transparent. I wanted to engage with them on that and have the audience experience different perspectives.”
Being Black, beautiful, and educated, lawyer and advocate Kutlwano, architect Buli, events management graduate Megan, and medical doctor Katlego, share their respective approaches to raising their daughters in the new media age from an honest, vulnerable and conscious approach.
“I would like people to appreciate the journey of motherhood from this cover. To respect the decisions that us as mothers take, from how we raise our kids to what we post and choose to share. I also want other mothers out there to know that we are a community. We are so different yet have so many similarities. We should lean on each other. I really wanted to do this cover with these ladies because of how much they express themselves and for them to know what an inspiration they are to the many followers they have. Being content creators, there is so much pressure to give of yourself and I think each of us do so to the extent of our choosing. This new age of social media comes with the pressure to conform but I love how each of us stands out,” expresses Kutlwano.
With new friendships on the horizon with most of the cover stars meeting on set for the first time, we’re excited to share over the next four weeks the candid conversations each of the ladies had about their motherhood journeys and how this intersects with their careers as digital content creators.
