New Dad on the Block: Kyeezi’s Journey into Fatherhood

Share

First-time father Kyeezi has spent the last three weeks juggling nonstop daddy duties. The arrival of his son has not only flipped his life completely but has also afforded him an experience he never thought could happen to him. A huge blessing, to say the least.

“Guys like me never think they’ll be someone’s dad one day. We are the type that don’t mind working seven days a week and are so caught up in trying to get the best out of ourselves that our work-life balance is completely spoiled. You can never imagine fathering someone one day,” he said.

With each passing year, the radio jock or DJ themes it to suit the times. Amid all the professional and personal changes in his life, the year 2024 is themed ‘getting comfortable with the uncomfortable.’

The arrival of his baby has surely shifted gears for the ‘confirmed workaholic,’ forcing him to slow down a little and rethink life.

“Being a father is a very big blessing for me. It has, so far, taught me patience. I now have to intentionally strike a balance because I have a family. I have to consciously tap out of being this overachiever and tap into just existing with my family. It’s a work in progress,” he said.

“I will be the first to say that if men were given the responsibility to give birth, there would be no children at all. My respect for women has probably shot up 1000%. There’s no way I could endure what my wife went through, and seeing her still continue is mind-blowing,” he said.

“I have a truly strong wife; she is amazing. Seeing her handle everything and still rise to the occasion of being a mother is a superpower I believe only women possess. Men couldn’t do it, and I know I couldn’t. It’s phenomenal,” he said.

Despite being there for his wife throughout, he admits that he would often feel helpless, knowing there was only so much he could do for her.

“I even found myself sympathising with women who have to go through all this alone. Imagine how difficult that is. We were both exhausted by the time this little guy came, so imagine if you had to do this alone. I just wish men would do better because pregnancy and giving birth are no child’s play,” he said.

When his wife broke the news of her pregnancy, he had just come home to change outfits for his next gig, and all he could say was “okay” at that moment. It was sinking in that his entire life was about to change.

“I had done one set already that evening and had three more to go, and I think those were the best sets I’ve ever played because I knew this was no longer about me. As I was DJ’ing, I was internalising the reality that everything has changed.

“And I think I am still processing the emotions of it all. What this transition really means for someone who is always on the move, always working, and wanting more. Now, as my wife puts it, I have my whole heart out here with us, and I have to take care of him. It’s an honour,” he said.

“Babies don’t care, man,” he said, laughing. “He is cute and is definitely the best thing in the world to me right now, but man, he rules our lives because we live around his clock. But I am proud to say that my wife and I have been tag-teaming to get certain routines in place and figuring out things together to make this journey seamless. And it’s been a journey. We’ve had to be aware of how he responds to certain things, what needs tweaking, what needs changing, and how we can better adjust things for his comfort and ours.

“This is very much my responsibility, as it is hers,” he said.

As a new father, he looks up to his own father to understand what being a father truly means.

“I listen to a lot of advice from professionals. I haven’t been a dad for long; I’m new here, so I need a lot of help. But the one person who inspires me more than anyone is my father. How present he was for me while growing up, how he went out to achieve so much and still managed to be there for us. I plan to be present in my son’s life. I want to raise a kind young man who is also his own person. I want him to be better than me in all respects, but I also want him to know that he is loved and cared for. My dad inspired me to be the man that I am today. I am drawing so much from how he was present regardless of it all,” he said.

Trusting God in this journey, Kyeezi believes that God blessing him like this is proof that there is a bigger purpose for both him and his son.
